About Emily

I am from Minnesota, USA. Growing up in the Twin Cities area, my family camped often in the northern area of the state, along the majestic North Shore of Lake Superior. It was always a dream to move permanently to the area. After college, I worked for a nonprofit dedicated to saving endangered species, using my English Literature and Writing degree as their communications officer. In my off hours, I wrote essays, became obsessed with Crossfit, and met friends at coffee shops and bars around the city. But over time, the ache to move “up north” got too strong, and when the time felt right, I found a way to do so. Now I live in a small cabin in the woods on the Gunflint Trail, a scenic byway that twists and soars 57 miles into the boreal forest and ends in a lake. I oversee the housekeeping department at a lodge/resort on the edge of the protected Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. In my spare time, I walk, hike, write, go out with friends, and, of course, and most of all, weave.

About North Woven Goods

North Woven Goods began a bit by accident. When my parents were preparing to downsize and move from the home I’d grown up in, I was slowly going through my childhood belongings at their house and taking them back up north with me or donating them. One of those belongings was a lap loom that had been given to me by my grandparents. I used it once in my childhood to weave a rug for my American girl dolls, and forgot about it until 2017. I brought the lap loom back to the Gunflint Trail and began using up a yarn stash I had on hand for knitting, and fell in love with the quiet, methodical nature of weaving. Now three looms, countless skeins of yarn, and many mistakes later, I am completely smitten with weaving. While it’s not always quiet and methodical—often it is frustrating, challenging, and mind boggling—I love the creation process. After I began posting about my weaving projects on social media, friends began to ask for woven goods and I began to seek out other opportunities to sell my work. The first several months I was able to sell through social media, commissions, and local shops in Grand Marais, but am excited to take the leap into selling my handwoven goods online to a wider audience.
